How can LIAISON design a low-carbon transport infrastructure in Europe?

To make transport infrastructure (TI) circular as quickly as possible, we need cooperation across Europe. This will ensure the necessary harmonization of protocols, norms and standards. It will also help generate and share knowledge about innovation. TI is asking for a new way of doing business. jumping from traditional circular product development strategies to “product-as-a-service” circular concepts and business models aligned, which must coexist with a high govern-driven sectoral structure. It is well known that TI has a high environmental impact due to its material use, waste production and CO2 emissions (during construction and operation).

“Europe must move towards a 100% renewable transportation system for climate, energy and sustainability reasons in 2050 and 50% in 2030”

With 136,700km of roads and 234,037km of railways, Europe has one of the largest TI networks in the world. We adopt a holistic approach to drive radical transformation in the sector, encompassing the entire life cycle of transport infrastructure.

Crucially, it establishes a dedicated governance framework to ensure the proper implementation of the developed solutions.

What does LIAISON offer?

We offer a comprehensive methodology, supportive tools, and near-market technological solutions aimed at transforming the EU transport infrastructure into a more sustainable economic activity.

The project strives to minimise costs and optimise energy management by embracing concepts such as industrialisation of the construction process, circular economy, and digitalisation in all stages of transport infrastructure’s life cycle.

LIAISON goes beyond the development of ground-breaking technological solutions. We also focus on building capacity, facilitating knowledge transfer, and cultivating new circular business models. These initiatives aim to drive widespread market adoption and promote sustainable practices within the field of transport infrastructure.

What are our solutions?

LIAISON provides an entire collection of innovative, close-to-market, technological solutions, which can be grouped into industrialised, circular, and smart:

These innovations are developed and validated at demonstration sites in various European countries, with the ultimate goal of mitigating the environmental impact of transport infrastructure.

How is LIAISON’s innovation implemented?

If these new technical solutions are to unleash their true potential, then a governance framework must be set up. The project does just that – it provides a Dynamic Multi-Infrastructure Governance Framework (DMIGF) which uses several digital tools and monitors compliance of the solutions with circular economy principles across the infrastructure lifecycle. This ensures such solutions are scalable and replicable.

The DMIGF will ultimately be able to provide organisations with a quantitative risk-based assessment methodology to evaluate the circular economy potential of TI carbon-neutral construction, operation and maintenance, and decommissioning strategies.

Who is LIAISON?

We are 15 entities from 6 EU countries, including key players of the transport infrastructure value chain, members of prominent national, EU and international platforms, networks, associations, and expert groups, and highly qualified and leaders in their sectors of activity.
