The LIAISON project was represented at the Transport Research Arena 2026 (TRA 2026), Europe’s leading conference on transport research and innovation, where researchers, industry representatives and policymakers gather to discuss the future of sustainable mobility and infrastructure.

During the conference, Darío Prieto-Quintana presented the work carried out by the GITECO group at the University of Cantabria on the use of bioasphalt as a substitute for oil-based bitumen. The presentation took place within the session “Eco-friendly materials and pavement solutions – Advancements in Material Research”, dedicated to innovative and lower-impact solutions for road infrastructure.

The research explores alternatives to conventional petroleum-derived binders by integrating more sustainable, bio-based materials into asphalt mixtures. This approach contributes to reducing the environmental footprint of road construction while supporting circular economy objectives and decreasing dependence on fossil-based resources.

Participating in TRA is particularly important for projects like LIAISON, as the conference serves as a major European platform for sharing cutting-edge transport research and connecting innovation with policy and industry needs. The 2026 edition, held under the theme “Re-Generation in Transport”, focused strongly on decarbonisation, resilient infrastructure and next-generation sustainable solutions.
